
BACKGROUND
Completed in late 2021, the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct serves as a modern cultural hub, home to nine leading performing arts companies. The facility relies on a large air-conditioning system that requires efficient heat dissipation. To enhance energy efficiency, Geo Exchange was engaged as the geothermal technology provider, and Flexigen was responsible for project delivery, implementing a solution that significantly improved the precinct’s sustainability compared to traditional cooling technologies.
DESCRIPTION
Flexigen provided project management services for the installation of eight underwater titanium heat exchangers at the Walsh Bay Precinct. The system utilizes the ocean as a heat rejection medium, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional HVAC cooling towers, which dissipate heat into the atmosphere using fans.
Each of the eight heat exchangers consists of nine titanium plates assembled and installed locally by TFG Group. Installed at a depth of 8 meters in Sydney Harbour, the system delivers a total heat rejection capacity of 2MW, significantly improving the energy efficiency of the precinct.
